Here are five of my top tips for kick-starting your career in radio journalism:

1. Be clear about your aims and your career path
Find out what your options are, and understand the benefits and consequences of working in radio. There are plenty of related careers if news isn’t for you.

2. Get experience and go on a course
Seek opportunities to develop and showcase your skills.

3. Start networking
Build up useful contacts, inside and outside the industry, and use them.

4. Understand the importance of the listener
The listener is the only reason you will be paid to work in radio. It makes sense to find out who they are and what they want.

5. Develop your voice
Have a strong demo tape to accompany your CV.
